Of Kings and Men
“Knights are noble, heroic figures and the lowest in the feudal hierarchy. They are still more important than any craftsman, city-dweller or peasant. They are the first of the Clanners and most of them belong to a specific Clan.
They are allowed to hold land, in return for military service and a cut of the taxes payed to them by the lower classes. They are also allowed to own a longsword and their own heraldry, though most take after their clan. Though they are required to adhere to the standards of honour and chivalry, less and less do so these days.
Knights make up the entirety of heavy cavalry in the Clan Lands and are, rarely, used as infantry. They are well-armoured and ride heavy chargers that stagger and disorient their enemies. Though their numbers are by no means small, they form only a tiny part of a Clan’s military, which is almost entirely made of peasants and city dwellers who serve as levies and garrison soldiers."
