Of Kings and Men
Protectors of the Realm
“Though the low-breed and the peasantry are often the worst sort of crowd, prone to being licentious and unchivalrous, particularly during times of war, sometimes from their ranks arises a person of particular dedication to goodness – both spiritual, thus cleansing his spirit of the taint of evil, and chivalrous, thus holding the realm and his clan above himself and attempting to do what is best for both.
Normally of peasant stock, they cannot be allowed in the feudal hierarchy, thus they are granted the honorific of the title of “Ser” and are allowed to bear a longsword, much like a knight. They are named protectors of the realm, brought into their home clan and given command of militias and guards over a measure of the Clan’s realm. It is to them that the people must look to when the horns sound the calls of war!"
